Title: Unsuspecting Spectators
Author: Zeffyface
Fandom: Super Smash Brothers
Characters: Link + Samus
Rating: PG
Word Count: 750(ish, it’s a drabble)
Notes: This was a silly thing made for Sometimesamuse's real (and lovely) piece Grounded, as a random little companion story. So if you don’t read hers first, THIS WILL MAKE NO SENSE. So go, bask in her writing glory!
That said, doing things just for kicks is surprisingly fun.

“Link, wake up. Link...” Groaning uncooperatively at the hand shaking his shoulder, Link promptly flipped over and buried his face in the couch cushions, receiving a soft snort for it. There was a long moment of silence, one that may have been menacing to someone not already asleep, before the voice came again, louder. “Hey, Marth doesn’t look half bad wet.”

“Hzna?” The blond Hylian was off the couch and alert before the sentence even finished, much to the amusement of the only other occupant in the room. After blinking owlishly as his mind processed the lack of Marth, he huffed and slouched, rubbing his eyes. “That was low, Sam.”

Dressed in full armor and carrying her helmet under her arm, Samus couldn’t have looked less remorseful. “Come on, you need to see this.” She gave one green sleeve a tug and took a step to the door.

Link raised an eyebrow and blinked. “What, not even a sorry? And why are you wearing all that, your match with Ike’s been over for hours-”

“Later, we have to hurry. And be quiet about it.” It was then that Link finally noticed the rarely-seen grin on Samus’s face, one that she was clearly trying to contain. The unmistakable 'I'm up to something' look. Rolling his eyes, Link strolled after.

“You’d think the one with six tons of armor would worry more about being quiet.”

“It’s necessary.” They rounded a corner, leading to the stands of the arena. Samus paused, then chose the stairs to the highest available section.

“Are you even going to try to let me in on this?” Despite the words, Link couldn’t help but feel the enthusiasm spread to him as they stealthily moved higher.

“Sorry, it’s more of a ‘You just have to see’ thing.”

“I swear if something jumps out at me I’m telling everyone here your birthdate.”

“You’d still be six months older, fairy boy.”

“AND about the time Fox walked in on you in the shower.”

“The damn door was locked, I don’t know how he got in unarmed…” The whispered bickering continued all the way up the long flight, only to be stopped when they reached the open air of the arena. Samus crouched down, motioning to Link to follow as she crept to the observing platform and lay flat. Link followed, surprised to see the stage in use. He gave a questioning look to his cohort, who waved to the stage and put on her helmet. Link shrugged, reaching into his tunic to find the long-distance scope he used for shooting. A slow grin spread over his face as he watched.

“Well, I never would’ve guessed.”

Samus turned her head slightly to follow the pair of warriors below them. “Ike practically bolted from the arena earlier, and I caught on the schedule he had it reserved. Then I remembered what you said about fishing.”

“I recall a story of curiosity and cats.”

“Who found out a certain prince’s preferences when you wouldn’t talk for six days?”

“Fair enough. Oh look…” Although he was certain she would deny it later, Link swore he heard an “Awww” coming from Samus' speakers when the platform touched down. “Wish I had a camera.”

Silently, Samus leaned back and removed her helmet, a smug grin firmly in place. 'Six tons of armor' on a spy mission, use your head.” On command, a small projection of a hologram flickered to life above her wrist. Link scooted back to hide the light from the rest of the arena and watched the still captures flick by. One in particular caught both of their attention.

“Keeper.”

“Agreed.” The blonds sat for a few moments, reveling in their achievements, before Link had the presence of mind to check over the side of the deck again.

“We should probably go, we’re hitting stalker territories now.”

Nodding, Samus crept back over to the stairwell and started down. “Sucessful evening, then?”

“Indeed. What are you gonna do with the picture?”

“I’m considering putting it on my ceiling as wallpaper.”

“Better yet, Marth’s ceiling.”

As if on cue, they both froze mid-step. Samus looked over to Link, who raised an eyebrow and grinned. She shook her head, blond hair doing nothing to hide her matching smirk.

“You’re horrible.”

“So we’re going to do it?”

“Hell yes.”

And they continued down the stairs, making a hasty exit before the pair in the arena decided to leave.
